Alberta Blogs: Still growing
January 11th, 2006 | by Administrator |Wow, I can’t believe how many bloggers are proud Albertans. It’s pretty cool that this province has embraced this medium as swiftly as it has.
So which town is better - Edmonton or Calgary?
I, personally, am biased. Show me the rollercoasters and indoor waterparks at your mall, Calgary!
Haha.
But I guess Calgary has something Edmonton doesn’t: money.
Well, maybe that’s a bit harsh.
But seriously, what’s the absolute worst town in Alberta you have ever been to?

I love Calgary. The first time I ever went to Edmonton was the day of the tornado so one can see why I am partial to Calgary.
The worst town in Alberta that I have ever been to NIOBE!

Edmonton or Calgary it’s a toss up. Too much traffic, too many rude drivers. Courtesy disappeared in about 1992, don’t know what happened. Used to be you turned a signal light on to change lanes you were given room to maneouver, now they speed up while you cut them. Terrible!

I agree with Michelle.
I drive past NIOBE to Innisfail everyday.
I never even realised it was a village for over 1 year. Someone I worked with had to tell me. That’s how small this hick town is.
2 grain elevators, half a dozen houses, 1 train track.
Yup that’s the hole town. Not one store, gas bar, anything…….
Not even a church.

Right now I would say Bashaw Alberta
Re: Bashaw Doctor Tax;
They have taxed its citizenry for approximately 150-200 dollars per year per resisdent to pay the doctor extra. It works out to be about 50-60 thousand dollars a year that this dude is getting.
1. It was a tax that was instituted behind closed doors with no public or taxpayers input. There was no oppourtunity given to the public to oversea or analyse other possible courses of action. Of which it appears none were researched, but then because the process was secretive and underhanded the public was not privy to any of it even if it was done.
2. Council and the mayor did not have a electoral mandate to do this, they did not do it with within full view of their constituants, an election, nor a plebisite, not even a survey was done before the tax was instituted.
3. On our tax assessment it does not detail what this extra tax is to be spent on other than ” Doctor Tax”. As in any other assessment I have the right as a taxpayer to know exactly where this money is going and what it is being spent on. This open ended way of doing things with no avenue for supervision on the specific details of allotment is an open door for graft and misuse.
4. There is no business plan provided by this doctor in order for the public to deem the necessity of such a tax. If council did request a plan the nature of voting this tax in did not allow for public scrutiny of such a plan.
5. The favourtistism and nepotism that this tax promotes smacks of the federal liberals sponsorship performance. Only those that own property are required to pay but not all of them see this doctor, a number of people who do not own property see him (those that rent and those that live in the county) and yet they do not have to pay. User fees are against the Canadian Health Act and this is a dirty way to get around that law. It is an unfair and judgemental tax.
6. This community is welcoming and fair.
a. Every business in this community works hard at keeping costs down and profits up and we do not give them tax concessions,
b. Every professsional in this community has worked and is working hard and we do not give them concessions.
c. Many of our resisidents have spent countless hours and dollars in post secondary institutions and we do not give them tax concessions.
7. Doctors already get compensations for working in rural settings, plus being paid by Alberta health care which I pay also, an extra 50-60 thousand dollars a year is terribly outrageous and greedy.
Are any of these citizens less valuable to our or your community? Canadians pride ourselves on treating each other as equals and valuing every single persons value to a healthy and viable community. Bashaw Council and this doctor are demonstrating that they believe, through this tax, that they are better than others and that they can do whatever they wish, in whatever manner they wish. They did not have a public mandate to do this. This doctor says he can make more money in the city-duh so can we all but we choose to balance other parts of our lifestyle with that monetary loss. Please deal with this issue in an effective and timely manner by adding to this blog and e mailing your opinion to anyone who you can

There are no horrible towns in Alberta, just curiosity pieces that are fun to visit, and just as much fun to leave behind.
